Common Reasons Why Your Used Car Won’t Start

Introduction

Used cars can have multiple issues with their parts and thus you need to be cautious before buying them. You should get a detailed car history report for the used car which you are planning to buy. This report can be obtained from experts like REVS . You only need to share either the VIN number or registration number of the car and pay a nominal fee. The car history report provides you a rational ground to buy the car.

You can face problems relating to non-starting in used cars. Some of the most common reasons why your used car won’t start are provided below:

Dead Battery

A weakened or dead battery is the most likely cause of your used car not starting. Battery provides electrical power to the engine and other components which is needed for starting it. You can try to jump-start your car and if it works, then the problem lies with a weakened or dead battery.

Defective Ignition Switch

If your battery is working properly and your car still does not start after the first few tries, then you should check the car’s ignition switch. You can check the root cause of the problem by turning on your car’s headlights. If the headlights are turning on, then it means the battery is working fine and the problem then most likely lies with a faulty ignition switch.

Broken Starter

A starter is an electric motor which is connected to the battery. It sets the engine in motion when you turn the ignition switch on. If the starter is broken, then the engine may not crank up at all when you turn the ignition switch. If you hear a clicking noise while turning the ignition switch on, then it may be due to a broken starter. A broken starter will not set the engine in motion which is needed for firing it and your used car will not start as a result of it.

Clogged Fuel Filter

With regular driving, the fuel filter of your car gets dirty. It attracts dirt, grease, muck, etc. and prevents them from entering the engine directly. As this buildup increases, it can restrict the flow of fuel to the engine which will prevent the engine from starting instantly as the engine does not get sufficient fuel to burn which is needed for starting. Ideally, you should inspect your fuel filter regularly for clogging and get it cleaned. You should also change the fuel filter after every 20,000 km or less if you drive on gravel roads frequently.

Dirty Air Filter

Airflow is very important for your engine to work properly. Used cars will have older air filters which may have developed considerable dirt buildup. There could be dust, grease, and other different types of buildup which can block the flow of air into your car’s intake. Fuel in your car will need air for ignition and due to reduced airflow, the ignition does not take place which leads to your car not starting. You should check your air filter for dirt buildup and clean or replace it as the need may be.
